Eagle Solutions Services' Schools selected to become national leaders on school meals and food education.
Earlier this year Eagle Solutions Services nominated two of its schools to be accepted onto the Food for Life Partnership's Flagship Programme 2008.
Out of only 6 schools across London, both Chestnut Primary School in Haringey and Surrey Square School in Southwark were successfully selected in March.
The new Lottery-funded Food for Life Partnership has chosen the schools we support to become Flagship Schools and Communities, helping to transform food culture in schools across England.
This trend follows on from our success with other schools, where we have worked to enable them to win The Times Body and Soul Food Education Award and the Soil Association Food for Life School of the Year Award.
This achievement is a commendable one for these schools, not least Surrey Square which only brought its catering service in-house with Eagle Solutions Services in September 2007. Along with the Food for Life Partnership, we are now supporting the schools to achieve the Food for Life Partnership Gold Mark.
This will mean that:
- The schools' catering teams will get help sourcing at least 75% fresh, 50% locally sourced and 30% organic ingredients for their school meals.
- For one week each the schools will host the Food for Life Partnership Cooking Bus, which will welcome, staff, parents and community groups on board alongside pupils to teach useful cooking skills in practical hands-on sessions.
- A garden education officer will help the schools communities develop an organic growing area in which pupils can grow food for school meals and cooking.
- Both schools will build stronger links with community food businesses and one or more local farms.
- Pupils will be given some of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences of their school lives, cooking and growing food and linking with a local farm.
